What is the best rod for commercial fisheries?
There are many different rods available that are suitable, we have reviewed as many as possible and weighed up the best rod for value of money for different methods; waggler, feeder, fishing the margins and the best all rounder.
It’s important to remember that most commercial fisheries do not stock specimen carp, so we have stayed away from specimen carp rods.
For example, if you plan on solely waggler fishing for carp, then you will need a strong waggler rod. However if you plan on fishing the feeder, then you will need a rod with a quiver tip.
Flexibility when choosing a rod
A good rod for commercial fisheries needs to be flexible, both in terms of usability for different methods and rod action.
A big attraction for anglers fishing commercials is the many different species you can target and the methods you can use. Making sure you have a rod capable for these different methods is important otherwise you could be missing out on a great days fishing.
As commercial fisheries often stock a wide variety of species of different sizes, it’s important to have a flexible rod action that will support this. A very stiff rod with no flex will bump off the smaller fish whilst a rod with too much flex will struggle with the larger fish, like big carp.
Commercial fisheries are filled with lots of carp so even if you are fishing for smaller species, you will need a rod capable of handling carp.
Match rods usually offer the best flexibility for different methods and are usually suitable for commercial fisheries.
What is the best rod length for commercial fisheries?
Most commercial fisheries are relatively small, therefore you do not need a large rod. The best size rod for commercial fisheries is between 8ft and 12ft.
There are exceptions of course as some commercials can be very large venues. A 12ft rod should be more than sufficent for the majority of large commercials with large carp.
What methods will you be using?
Commercial fisheries have a large variety of species and it’s important to know what fish you are going to be targeting and how you plan on fishing for them before you decide which rod is best for you.

Hunter Pro 11ft Feeder Rod – Best Budget Feeder Rod
We are very impressed with this “budget” rod. It offers features that you would usually expect on much more expensive premium rods.
The progressive rod action make this rod suitable for all sizes and species that are usually stocked in commercial lakes. The handing of fish on this rod is superb and gives you great control over the fish.
At 11ft, you would expect a feeder rod capable of handling large carp to be very heavy. However it’s very lightweight at only 260g.
The casting weight of 10g to 100g means this rod can handle the largest of feeders with ease.
There are some drawbacks however, the rod does feel a little cheap, owing to the EVA handle, but thats to be expected from a budget rod, and it does not take away from the fact that this is a great rod with fantasic value for money.

- EVA Handle with brushed aluminium screw reel seats
- Composite construction weighing only 260g! Matt black anti reflective finish

Hunter Pro Carbon x Match Rod – Best Budget Float Rod
The Hunter Pro Carbon x Match Rod is an entry level match rod which is ideal for beginners, youngsters and those on a tight budget. At 10ft and only 220g it’s very easy to handle and get to grips with.
For smaller fish such as roach, tench and small carp, the Hunter Pro offers great sensitivity and control.
The medium fine rod action suits itself to the smaller fish in the lake. In our experience the sweet spot for handling fish was upto around 8lb carp. The rod still handles larger fish well, but because of the sensitivity of the rod tip, this just takes a little more care in bringing the larger fish – in some cases making it even more exciting!
As you would expect from an entry level rod, you don’t quite get the same control and feedback as you would be a more expensive rod, but don’t let that put you off though. For the price, this is an excellent little rod.
All in, this is a great budget rod that offers fantasic value for money and would be a great buy for small commercial fisheries. If you plan on targeting larger carp, then you should look at the Daiwa D.
